Joseph William Lovetro, 27 of Dunnellon, FL, was charged with attempted murder, sexual battery, false imprisonment and felony criminal mischief in connection with the April 16, 2006 attack of an unidentified woman. At 6AM that morning, Marion County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a wooded area south of Ocala, FL to investigate a 911 report of a nearby resident of screaming coming from the woods. The caller had heard a voice screaming for help coming froma wooded location in the area of Southwest 38th St and Southwest 37th Place Road. The deputies first saw Lovetro's vehicle, a red Nissan Sentra. Following the sound of the woman's cries, they found Lovetro about 100 feet away, lying on top of the 39-year-old nude victim. A cloth was wrapped around the woman's face and he was holding his hands over her mouth and nose. One of the woman's arms had been tied behind her back with a bra. She had been beaten severely and sustained several cuts and bruises. She had to be revived by deputies via CPR. The woman survived the attack, no thanks to Lovetro, who would have most likely killed her judging by the state in which she was found.
The woman frequented several motels on South Pine Avenue in Ocala and is a known prostitute. Lovetro had picked the woman up in that area with the intention to have sex with her at a remote location. The woman became frightened and tried to flee from Lovetro, but he was able to outrun and capture her.
Lovetro claimed that he and the woman used cocaine suppied by the woman. He said he blacked out and woke up on top of her. he later admitted that the woman did not have any cocaine. Lovetro had already been arrested in 1997 for robbery with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment. He was sentenced to 5 years of "community supervison" for those offenses. As of this writing, Joseph Lovetro is currently incarcerated Franklin Correctional Institution in Carrabelle, FL. He is scheduled to be released August 18, 2014.
